Most people associate steel fabrication with industrial structures, cranes and mining projects. This project challenged our team in a very different way - where millimetres mattered not only structurally, but visually.

Sutton Engineering Group was proud to support the fabrication of the structural framework for Home Under My Feet and Bells in My Ears by artist Monica Rani Rudhar, commissioned as part of the New Monumental public art series curated by Vital Commons and delivered by studio.mckeon.

Representing one of Monica Rani Rudhar's first permanent public artworks at a monumental scale, the project required a level of precision where visual presentation was just as important as structural performance. The artwork required the fabrication of a large suspended structure inspired by the traditional South Asian Jhumka earring, enlarged to a monumental scale, incorporating rolled tube sections, precision alignment features and multiple connection points for the artwork's final components.

Unlike traditional structural projects where tolerances are often hidden, even minor variations in this project could have resulted in irregular chain drape, misaligned rings or visible inconsistencies when viewed from below. Maintaining dimensional accuracy throughout fabrication was therefore critical.

SEG worked closely with the artist Monica Rani Rudhar, studio.mckeon and the broader project team to ensure the finished structure remained true to the original vision while meeting the practical requirements of steel fabrication.

Our scope included precision rolling, fabrication, welding, abrasive blasting, metallic coating and the manufacture of a custom transport cradle to assist with handling and installation while protecting the finished painted surfaces.

This project demonstrates how engineering, fabrication and creative design can come together to deliver complex public artworks that are both visually striking and structurally robust.
