Concrete poles are widely used throughout Australian power and communications infrastructure, but behind every finished pole is a highly specialised piece of manufacturing equipment, the steel mould used to form it.
Sutton Engineering was engaged for the manufacture and supply of more than 40 new tapered pole mould sections. Manufactured in 3 metre sections, the project brought together several of Sutton Engineering's in-house capabilities including heavy steel fabrication, welding and precision machining, as dimensional accuracy and alignment are critical.
The completed moulds are used in the manufacture of spun concrete poles for applications including electricity distribution, transmission and communications infrastructure.
Across Australia electricity networks are undertaking ongoing programs to replace ageing pole infrastructure, improve network reliability and strengthen resilience to bushfires and extreme weather. Concrete poles are one of several long life solutions used throughout power distribution and transmission networks.
Following fabrication and machining, the mould sections were abrasive blasted, externally primed and painted.
The project demonstrates Sutton Engineering's ability to combine large scale steel fabrication and precision machining to manufacture specialised industrial equipment where accuracy must be maintained across multiple connecting sections.
