Sutton Engineering Group recently completed fabrication of a 12.8 tonne crane grillage for a mixed use apartment development on Hassall Street, Parramatta.

The structure was fabricated using custom 1200 welded beams with additional web stiffening plates installed on both sides of the web, increasing the beam weight to approximately 1.1 tonnes per linear metre. This heavy duty configuration was designed to support the high loading requirements of the tower crane foundation system.

Fabrication and welding were completed at our St Marys workshop, with two stages of weld inspection undertaken using Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) to ensure compliance with project specifications. During fabrication the crane stools were trial fitted to the grillage to confirm alignment and correct positioning of connection points prior to coating. This trial assembly ensured the crane base components matched the required bolt locations and tolerances, reducing installation time and ensuring accurate fitment once delivered to site.

The completed grillage was then abrasively blasted and finished in a two-coat Jotun protective coating system, completed in Traffic White.

The structure will support installation of a Potain MCR505 J25 luffing jib tower crane, a high-performance crane capable of lifting up to 25 tonnes with jib lengths ranging from 30m to 65m. At its maximum 65m jib length, the crane provides a lifting capacity of 17 tonnes with a tip load of 4.7 tonnes.

The crane will operate at an approximate height of 70 metres, installed on eight 5 metre C809A tower sections, providing lifting coverage across the Hassall Street Parramatta development site.
